The DPWH, headed by Secretary Mark Villar, conducted groundbreaking ceremonies for two expressways in CALABARZON, the South Luzon Expressway Toll Road 4 (SLEX TR4) and the Cavite-Laguna Expressway (CALAEX) on March 26 and 27, respectively. The events were attended by local chief executives and agency heads which include Quezon Province Governor David Suarez, Cavite Province Governor Jesus Crispin Remulla, Director Abraham Sales of the Toll Regulatory Board, NEDA Regional Director Luis Banua and other concerned stakeholders.

The SLEX TR4, a four-lane 66.74-km toll road from Sto. Tomas City, Batangas to Mayao, Lucena City, will reduce travel time from 4 hours to 1 hour; making travel faster from Laguna, Batangas and Quezon Provinces, and Bicol Region.

On the other hand, the CALAEX, a 4-lane 45.29 km closed-system toll expressway, will connect Cavite Expressway (CAVITEX) and SLEX. The project will start from the CAVITEX in Kawit, Cavite and end at the SLEX-Mamplasan interchange in Biñan, Laguna. The project is expected to improve trade and socio-economic activities in the Cavite and Laguna Provinces.

Both projects are part of President Duterte’s Luzon Spine Expressway Network Master Plan. The plan envisions a 1000 km series of expressways connecting Luzon from North to South. The two expressways are expected to be completed by 2022.
